Chapter Eight

Six months later

I sighed, staring at the massive pile of paperwork on my desk. The school system here was . . . complicated, to say the least. It was no wonder I’d been immediately assigned as the Royal Liaison once I agreed to the terms of my marriage. As someone who had worked in the public school system for nearly a decade, I was able to understand and mention concerns ordinary people wouldn’t have noticed. Unfortunately, each time I brought something up, I received a literal novel’s worth of notes and adjustments to consider. It was heartening to see so much thought put into the work by other public servants, but it was tiring to always be leafing through something.

I missed being an actual teacher. Grading papers was nothing compared to reading legal jargon every day. Watching my students grow and learn was so fulfilling. As a Princess of Onillia, I missed out on all of that.

Not for the first time, I wondered how my class back home was doing. Chelsea said they asked her questions about me all the time and that they wanted me to know they wished I could come back. They would be moving on to second grade soon. I hadn’t gotten to see a single one of them transform from a scared child to a confident one. There had been no learning of letters, no sharing of books, no singing, no nothing.

My heart broke just thinking about it.

“Is that the proposition for school lunches?”

Turning, I watched as Alexander exited his private bedroom on the other side of our shared suite, straightening his tie. He was wearing his formal sash over his suit, ready to make a public announcement regarding the projects he’d been working on.

I knew his schedule like the back of my hand, and he was the same with mine. We had weekly meetings to discuss our joined outings with our schedulers and dinner with his parents each night. Of course, we shared a suite, so it was pretty much impossible not to see him every day.

To be honest, I hadn’t believed living in the same space as him would feel so natural. It was like we were roommates, with our private accommodations separated by the common area. I’d taken to working at the desk in there, trying to ease the feeling I should always be working when I was “home.” Because of that, we often spent a lot of time talking in the evenings, laughing and discussing various items.

“Yeah,” I replied, leaning in my seat. “We’re still working to eliminate the statute that makes it to where children whose parents owe money aren’t penalized by not receiving food.”

“I still can’t believe that was a thing,” Alex muttered, still fiddling with the knot in his tie. “If I’d had any idea they were going without food—”

“What’s done is done. We know now, so we can fix it. That’s what you should focus on.”

He nodded, frustration evident on his features as he continued to struggle with the tie.
